While the prospect of collecting rent every month–particularly in this economy–can be very attractive, there are a number of things amateur landlords should think about before renting out their property. UrbanTurf explored this topic in today’s article “Amateur Landlord: The Pitfalls to Avoid.” Our own Richard Gersten is the article’s featured expert, and he talks about the importance of keeping an eye out for maintenance issues.

“One would think that being a landlord is simple, but if you’re not attuned to the responsibility, there are number of things that can go wrong […] As a landlord you have to know the condition of your property and you have to be prepared to fix things when they break,” he explained. He added that “landlords who thoroughly inspect their premises before renting often save themselves a lot of misery in the long run.”
