Without the help of our talented team of leasing agents, Urban Igloo wouldn’t be able to consistently match renters to homes they love, and landlords to qualified tenants. We thought you’d be interested in getting to know this vital part of the Urban Igloo team better.
For our first agent interview, we sat down with Capri Baylor to find out more about why she is passionate about real estate. We also delved into her on-the-ground experience to learn which features and amenities renters most often look for and what it takes to be a good leasing agent.
Thanks for joining us, Capri. What piqued your interest in joining the Urban Igloo team?
After more than four years in the corporate world I decided to follow my true passion: real estate. The deciding factor for applying to work at Urban Igloo was the job description, which stated that “the applicant must be willing to obtain a real estate license.” I was overjoyed that Urban Igloo actually wanted their agents to be the best experts in the field.
What do renters look for the most often in an apartment and/or building?
Aside from the price range, most renters I work with are looking for the big “L” word…location, location, location! A building that is located in the renter’s desired neighborhood typically outranks other desires such as square footage, amenities and even price.
Which feature or amenity is the hardest to find for renters?
The most difficult thing for most renters to find is significant square footage that matches their price point, particularly within the District. Most renters don’t initially want to compromise size but realize quickly that size is not as important as their other needs.
What do you enjoy about the business of finding people the perfect place to live?
I have always loved going to open houses on my own so it’s no secret that I enjoy seeing the spaces available in our metro area. I also like learning more about the market and putting myself in the renter’s shoes when viewing apartments with my clients. Most importantly, I enjoy experiencing the joy and satisfaction of renters who find their perfect apartment.
What would you say has been your most rewarding placement?
If I had to select one, I will say that my most rewarding placement was my very first, which was with a young man from Richmond. I was happy to help my very first customer find his first D.C. apartment in a great location with access to everything from work to nightlife. My confidence was established at that moment and it affirmed that I could be successful AND pursue my passion.
What skills would you say are necessary to be a successful leasing agent?
As with any sales position, the best salespeople should have a passion for what they do and believe in what they are selling. I have full confidence in the landlords we work with, the properties we show and our ability to help find the best apartments throughout the D.C. area. In my opinion, when you do what you love to do, everything else falls into place!
